Issue #2: Vernal pools and other sensitive habitats are present
At the end of Margate Drive lies an extensive ‘“Vernal Pool”. This pool fills with water each spring and is inhabited with spring peepers and other amphibians. This pool also supports other wildlife such as Redwing Blackbirds
This vernal pool is not currently mapped in the LCWI as a wetland but aerial imagery decades ago, coupled with mapped hydric soils and low elevation demonstrates that this vernal pool reappears each year performing a vital function for native amphibians and other wildlife.
Annexing this parcel just to pave over a vernal pool does not benefit the residents of Buffalo Grove or improve livability, sustainability, or quality of life and is at odds with goal #2 of the Village’s strategic plan (Enhanced, beautiful, safe, sustainable neighborhoods).
The proposed Margate Drive extension would essentially pave over the vernal pool at the current end of Margate Drive
Aerial imagery from 2024 clearly shows the vernal pool filled with water
Aerial imagery from 1961 shows the vernal pool filled with water. This wetland features returns each year and has for decades.
Spring peeper (Psuedcris crucifer) is an early spring amphibian which is reliant on vernal pools to reproduce.
